Ernesto Lecuona

Lecuona was called "the Cuban George Gershwin" . . . Let that be his epitaph. His Malaguena was a setpiece for nearly every professional pianist of the 40s and 50s, and his Always in My Heart would have been best song at the Oscars (42) but for White Christmas by Irving Berlin. Lecuona was an expatriate who lived in Tampa, FL because he refused to live in Cuba under Castro. His music is timeless and wonderful. The lyrics are less so in both categories.
